On Sunday 11 August 2019 Bella Mckinney, aged 6 swam 1,000 metres and raised £500.80 – a staggering 333% of her original target.
Bella’s mum, Jane McKinney said:
“Bella comes to the Wingate Centre for gymnastics and has had her birthday party there too.
She noticed that they were selling toys and sweets and asked me why. I explained that it is to raise money for the centre, so that lots of children with disabilities could come for holidays or days out to and use the facilities.
Bella decided that she wanted to raise some money to help and wrote a list of things she could do, eventually deciding on a swim. We thought perhaps a few lengths, but Bella had other ideas! “
Bella set herself a target of 1,000 metres. She practiced every weekend, curtesy of her dad Keith, and built up her stamina. On the day she did brilliantly and completed 40 lengths in 55 minutes a wonderful achievement.
Sarah Hampton, Fundraiser at the Wingate Special Children’s Trust said:
“An amazing achievement, it is not often that people raise so much more than their original target. Thank you to everyone who supported Bella and of course a very big thank you to Bella for all her hard work”
